We invite you to our 2.5-day workshop about Changing the picture for Aboriginal and Community Controlled organisations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in mainstream organisations.

Over 23, 25 and 27 October 2023 Our Watch will deliver a 2.5 day online workshop on our resource Changing the picture: A National Resource to Support the Prevention of Violence Against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women and their Children.

This series of workshops are designed for people working in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in mainstream organisations who would like to better understand the Changing the picture model, and how this resource contributes to preventing violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their children.

This workshop is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in Aboriginal Community Controlled organisations and non-Indigenous and mainstream organisations only

You do not need to work in an organisation that focuses specifically on violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women or primary prevention. The workshop is designed to demonstrate how violence prevention work can be undertaken in almost all work settings. Whether you work in local government, an NGO, the education sector, administrative services, media and communications, IT or more, this workshop will be relevant for you.

This training is particularly useful for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have a role designing, administering or evaluating policies, programs and processes in organisations.

The content of the workshop will focus on:

  • explaining what primary prevention of violence against women is
  • exploring the concept of intersectionality
  • setting out in detail our model for the prevention of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, including drivers of violence and essential actions to address these drivers
  • listening to the wisdom and knowledge from two Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women guest speakers
  • hearing from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men doing primary prevention work (we have put together an all-male panel for one of the workshops)
  • the workshops will be dynamic and include Our Watch staff, expert Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander speakers, combined with a range of reflective activities and space for discussion.

At the end of the workshops, we believe you will have an excellent understanding of what primary prevention is, as well as being able to apply ideas from the workshop to change practices in non-Indigenous organisations. You will be able to begin applying the Our Watch framework and use an intersectional approach in your practice.
